PAC Spring Bazaar 2013

Thank you to everyone who came out and supported the Tahsis Community Garden Society at the Spring Bazaar!  We had a wonderful time dishing out the sweet ice cream sundaes to a very receptive crowd!  Special thanks to Janet K. for making and donating the lovely Tahsis Poncho for our raffle.  We were also lucky enough to raffle off one of Fern's famous black forest cakes!

Thanks to our volunteer banana splitters, Traci, Andrea and Karli.  Homemade caramel sauce from local chef Silvie Keen was a most welcome addition to the choices.

In other garden news, it was nice to have the first of the local greens in the salad served by the CMESS Farm to School coordinators.  Was that sorrel?  baby chard?  It was from Graham and Sarah's garden and it was delicious in the Smoked Salmon Lemon Arugula Salad.  (Again, one of Silvie's recipes, originally served at a garden work party last summer, wow!)

The ice cream treats were served with little garden pots to use this spring.

One of our most appreciative customers,
Keith made sure he was there 10 minutes early to be first in line for ice cream!

Beds are filling up in the Greenhouse

Juanita, Kim, Maureen and Mervin have been all working at filling up the beds in the greenhouse, 1/3 leaves 2/3 soil.  We are hoping to have enough soil to finish filling all the beds in the greenhouse so please don't top up any outside beds with the communal piles of soil.  It never goes as far as you'd imagine, eh?  A good reminder that composting and soil building is important in our soil starved village.

Kim wants to pass on the message that if you are interested in lending a hand (and shovel) please don't forget to add the leaves, leave the middle bed until last, and we will have a meeting to divy up greenhouse space soon.  Thanks again for another great work party everyone!

A quick note of thanks to Doug Edward, who volunteered to help his friends and neighbourhood gardeners by driving the truck and loading up and unloading the (extremely heavy) wood for the beds.  And helping deliver some more donated wooden frame windows to the garden.

By the way, thank you to Judy B. for those windows!  One of the windows has turned a raised bed into a mini greenhouse already.

We really appreciate all the support and help we get from our friends and neighbours here.  Thanks again everyone!

Claire Trevena visits our Garden

and gets a welcome from Juanita, who takes care of our "Environmentally Friendly Garden Pest Control Unit" also known as Dudley the Duck, who was hatched by our Kindergarten to Grade 3 class last year.

Claire Trevena, our North Island MLA dropped in to see the garden, and is involved in her own community garden where she lives.  She was in Tahsis today meeting and speaking with community members and had a tour of our local salmon hatchery.

Well, it Didn't Rain for our Work Party...

but we did wake up to SNOW this morning!

Is that a polar bear?  No, just Ludo the dog.

Kalu was at the garden too.

Hopefully Bev's cabbage is ok in the snow!

Catherine G. brought some much needed tea and healthy snacks, always a great way to support the garden!

Sophia and Kalu played by the holly tree.  Sophia would throw snow balls and Kalu would jump up and catch them.

Even in the snow, there are many colourful signs of spring.

Sophia was happy to dig around in the Farm to School Garden.

The finished beds!  Thank you everyone!  Also thank you to Kim and Debbie who spent some time wrestling and pruning the ever-present, ever-hardy, ever-menacing blackberry vines!
