Best Slugfest Ever!

We had a G R E A T turn out for the Community Garden's 7th Annual Slugfest.  Volunteer Michelle took a count about midway and best estimate is that there were 65 visitors to the garden.  We ran out of lemonade (stinkin hot!) but everyone got a fruit kebab or a slice of watermelon.  Thanks to Kim for purchasing the fruit and finding the best strawberries in all of Nanaimo and to Silvie, Slicer of Fruit.

But more important, the Grand Slug Hunter 2018 is Silas - who found 22 slugs.  Silas' brother Elijah came in second with 21 slugs, and brothers Carter & Kessler tied for third, with 16 slugs each.  Slug Master Juanita tallied the slugs, read some slug stories to the children, and also brought along Dudley the Duck for show and tell.  Thank you Juanita - you kindness abounds.  Many thanks to Janet Kirsop who hand crafted Norman, the Grand Prize Slug.

Kudos to Jim, who built some sweet birdhouses for the kids to paint.  Gabe's colour combo was just excellent and Karma's wee birdfeeder was another work of art, among many.

Lynda did a wonderful job making sure everything was set up and organized.  Thanks to Kim for lending her voice to address the crowd and to member volunteers Maureen, Michelle & Silvie who helped set up, take down and clean up.  Jim and Sarah F. also lent a hand with the tents, always appreciated, what a terrific community!

AGM Sunday April 15th

Tahsis Community Garden Society

Annual General Meeting
Community Meet & Greet
Tahsis Seniors Centre
Sunday, April 15th
1 - 3 pm

Everyone is welcome to join the community gardeners for a social gathering and our AGM.  Potluck dishes are welcomed but optional, snacks and refreshments are provided.  Hear about the projects the Community Garden worked on in 2017, including the drip irrigation project funded by the Tahsis Literacy Society, Farm to School garden improvements, asparagus beds and black gold aka compost.

Become a Member!
The Tahsis Community Garden is a peaceful green gem located at the end of the Riverside Trailer Park.  Surrounded by deer fence, it offers raised bed garden plots, elevated ‘tabletop’ gardens, a large greenhouse, and is the site of the Tahsis Farm to School garden.  The Tahsis Community Garden Society supports Tahsis Days with an annual donation to the Silent Auction as well as presenting the ever-popular Slugfest.  Based on the success of last year’s Summer Solstice Potluck, there are plans to make this an annual event.  Garden volunteers always man a table at the PAC Bazaars – we’ll be at the Spring Bazaar on May 5th.

Gardening has great health benefits including increased exposure to Vitamin D, lowered stress hormone levels, increased physical strength and flexibility, the positive psychological effects of being in nature, and gardeners choose what to grow and harvest their produce at its nutritional peak.
The annual membership fees are $20 for a raised bed, $10 for a tabletop, and greenhouse plots are $10 as an add-on, or $15 as a stand-alone.  Shelving in the greenhouse is free to members for starting their veggies or flowers.
Currently, we have 4 raised beds and 8 tabletop beds available for the 2018 gardening season.
Membership involves a commitment to participate in the overall maintenance of the garden by helping out at the Spring and Fall work parties and taking on a general chore for the season.
No one is asked to contribute beyond their physical abilities; any undertaking large or small, supports the whole.

The community garden is a registered non-profit society.

2017 Slugfest @ the Community Garden

It was a picture perfect day for the
6th Annual Slugfest at the Tahsis Community Garden.

Many thanks to Catherine for overseeing the craft table and prizes for the Slug Hunt, and volunteer helpers Lynda and Jesse for lending a hand with set up, tear down and slug count.  Kim provided impromptu garden tours to residents, Silvie made a big platter of fruit kebobs, Juanita came by with Dudley the Indian Runner Duck and Rita made sure the grass was neat and trim for our Tahsis Days event.  Kudos to Allison and Karli for some great photos, and Lauren's donation of potato chips and freezies.  Again thank you Janet for this year's creation of Norman the Slug for our top hunter.

Catherine & Jesse wait for arrivals
The greatest contribution to the success of the day goes to the many children, parents, grandparents, and aunties & uncles who turned out to hunt slugs, paint flower pots, and enjoy the community garden.

"I'm three!"

The kids had fun finding slugs, burning off some energy, and playing on the woodchip piles. They got to meet Aubrey's new rabbit, say hello to Dudley Duck, sing Happy Birthday to Willow and celebrate with a slice of birthday cake.

A nice easy afternoon, thank you everyone for coming out.

Grand Prize Slug

Janet of Tahsis Toys has again created the most unique prize for the Great Slug Hunt at Slugfest this weekend.  It's been hot and dry so it will be a challenge to find the most slugs, but Tahsis kids and visitors should be up for the task.

Slugfest runs from 3-4 PM on Sunday, July 16.  For a complete list of Tahsis Days events, please drop by or call the Tahsis Recreation Centre.

Hand-crafted Slug donated by Tahsis Toys - Thank you Janet!

Silent Auction Donation

Guess what the Community Garden is donating to this year's Silent Auction.  Hint - is it bigger than a breadbox?
Answer - it is a breadbox!  And it comes with a matching shelf with hooks for hanging your hat or your garden gloves.

Sincere thanks to Society Director Rita (aka rockstar volunteer) who made this year's donation on behalf of the Tahsis Community Garden Society.
