Sunday's Work Party

Lynda was kind enough to take a few pictures at the garden on Sunday.  The weather was perfect, everything was tidied up and the garden is looking really good.  

Thanks to all who came out to lend a hand.  Now if we could have a stretch of warm, sunny weather, our veggies would be much happier.

Fall Clean Up Sunday, Sept 22

Fall Clean up at the Garden this Sunday, 10 AM. Bring a bagged lunch and drinking water, tools/gloves.  

A general meeting is planned during our lunch break regarding the Remote Facilities Composting Pilot Program.

March 30th - Spring Community Garden Work Party

 

The weather was exceptional and so were the four lovely, hardworking women who showed up first thing in the morning.  In alphabetical order, Cheryl, Juanita, Katy and Lynn, deserve a Big Thank You for all their efforts in cleaning up our community garden.  Of course our heartfelt thanks is also extended to Terry, man amongst men, who always works his Garden Magic for the benefit of all. Thanks Terry!!

Cheryl is one dedicated, hard-working gal and it is to her that your Executive extend special thanks for uprooting mega wicked blackberry vines and clearing a large area for future planting.  In all, there were 9 truckloads of blackberry vines/brambles & sundry debris removed from the garden and it’s lookin’ good!  Thanks also goes out to Chuck for hauling two of those truckloads away previous to the work party.

Cheryl and I were able to save the tabletop that was leaning precariously, looking like it was about to tip over.  The legs were not rotten and Cheryl literally picked it up…whoa!...and moved it to safer ground with more support to come.  Good going Cheryl!  The words, “we are women hear us roar” came instantly to mind.  Inspiring!  Chuckle.

 

A gentle reminder to those who share community greenhouse space and/or have yet to clean up their outside raised beds, please do so.  We will soon be hosting a walk-through for our guest, Todd Carnahan and want to, with pride, put our best foot forward.

Fall Clean Up: Sunday October 28th

All Members:  It's time for the annual fall clean up at our community garden.  Please bring gloves, something to drink, rakes/snippers and a bagged lunch.  Meet at the garden at 10 AM.  This should take about 4 hours, depending on how many hands we have.  Please have a look at the TCGS October 15th email/chore list for more information.  Thanks all!

Thank you to everyone that braved the heat and shared their Mother’s Day with us in the garden. It was nice to meet the new garden members who dug right in preparing the garden for a bountiful season for all to enjoy!  We accomplished a lot today.  Hoping this good weather is here to stay as the May long is usually the start of great growing season.  Thanks again to all those that came out today. Everyone working together will keep the TCG flourishing and growing!  - Kim

Everyone is welcome to join the community gardeners for a social gathering and our AGM.  Potluck dishes are welcomed but optional, snacks and refreshments are provided.  Hear about the projects the Community Garden worked on in 2017, including the drip irrigation project funded by the Tahsis Literacy Society, Farm to School garden improvements, asparagus beds and black gold aka compost.

The Tahsis Community Garden is a peaceful green gem located at the end of the Riverside Trailer Park.  Surrounded by deer fence, it offers raised bed garden plots, elevated ‘tabletop’ gardens, a large greenhouse, and is the site of the Tahsis Farm to School garden.  The Tahsis Community Garden Society supports Tahsis Days with an annual donation to the Silent Auction as well as presenting the ever-popular Slugfest.  Based on the success of last year’s Summer Solstice Potluck, there are plans to make this an annual event.  Garden volunteers always man a table at the PAC Bazaars – we’ll be at the Spring Bazaar on May 5th.

Gardening has great health benefits including increased exposure to Vitamin D, lowered stress hormone levels, increased physical strength and flexibility, the positive psychological effects of being in nature, and gardeners choose what to grow and harvest their produce at its nutritional peak.

The annual membership fees are $20 for a raised bed, $10 for a tabletop, and greenhouse plots are $10 as an add-on, or $15 as a stand-alone.  Shelving in the greenhouse is free to members for starting their veggies or flowers.

Currently, we have 4 raised beds and 8 tabletop beds available for the 2018 gardening season. 

Membership involves a commitment to participate in the overall maintenance of the garden by helping out at the Spring and Fall work parties and taking on a general chore for the season.

No one is asked to contribute beyond their physical abilities; any undertaking large or small, supports the whole.

The community garden is a registered non-profit society.

Organic Compost Delivered ⛟

Today the Tahsis Community Garden Society took delivery of about 24 yards of excellent, organic compost from the Comox Valley Regional District.  This black gold is Net Zero Waste compost.  Many thanks are in order:   

• Mark Tatchell and Janet St. Denis of the Village of Tahsis who brought the availability of free organic compost from CRVD to the Society's attention.  
• Stephanie Vidal of the Comox Valley Regional District who provided so much information and arranged it so we could pick it up on a day outside the normal time frame.  
• Rita Dawson, for working her magic with Carla of Tahsis Farm to coordinate the delivery of a sample load, for securing tarps and prepping the site, and stepping in as Event Photographer.  
• Tahsis Farmers Carla and Josh for bringing in the first sample load.  
• Kim Anderson, who spent hours on the phone searching for a trucker willing to load up and transport the compost all the way from Cumberland to Tahsis, and for handling the hire and ultimate delivery. 
• Silvie Keen, who roped in all the email and coordinated with CVRD to arrange the pick up amount and date, got the word out to members and made sure that Gary Markus Trucking got a cheque!
• Gary Markus Trucking, who towed the load and the trailer from Cumberland across the island and up and over 'the top' to our remote village.  
• Terry Fassbender, who rallied from the sick bed and helped guide in the truck and unload.  
• To everyone who has pledged and/or paid a contribution towards the trucking costs. (Please drop your contribution to Silvie, Kim or Maureen - you know where to find us)

And a special thanks to volunteers who came out today with a message from our garden President, Kim Anderson:   

Everything went off without a hitch today. The compost is here!  I wanted to send a huge shout out to those of you that were able to help out in the garden today! Thank you!  Don’t worry if you couldn’t make it today there is still lots to do!

Also a gentle reminder that we will be prioritizing where the compost goes so please do not take any for your personal bed. We will need all hands on deck when the times come to allocate it.

An extra special Thank You to all the Blackberry Slayers today!  I feel like I had body piercing from head to toe, so prickly!  Even Dan from across the street pitched in and whacked away at those suckers!

Spring Clean Up April 30th

What a great day at the garden on Sunday!

To all the members and non members that came out to the work party on Sunday. 😊  You are such a dedicated lot to brave the weather. The Green House  looks FANTASTIC inside and out.  Please do not bring anything back in, we will be installing the irrigation system as soon as it comes in Yippee!   Picnic table and bench are all cleaned as well. Terry was on brambles and planning the new F2S bed design.  All materials will be ordered early next week. So nice to have some students Brody and Seth involved in the garden this year. Oh to be young and limber again...  Was hoping to get some burning done but will have to reschedule that for a drier day 😊  Thanks again for your commitment to maintaining this gem of ours and may the Sun Gods  😎 shine sooner than later.

The rain held off (more or less), the greenhouse was cleaned up with avon bubblebath (!), Terry battled blackberries, Kim scrubbed the greenhouse (wash/rinse/repeat), Maureen worked with quiet dedication, Juanita came an hour early, Catherine and Bill dug right in, Silvie cleaned the bench, Cookie made her observations and sought out potential petters, Patricia chipped in and exuded peace, Debbie and Louis stepped right up looking for jobs to accomplish, and newest members Brody & Seth helped with hoses and even got a row of peas planted.  Many thanks to mom Allison for capturing the event with these photos, and for grabbing a sponge and joining in.

Greenhouse Clean Up April 30th

Great News!  

The Tahsis Literacy Society has approved our grant application for funding the Drip Irrigation Project.  

We will be installing drip irrigation in the community garden greenhouse and in the Farm to School garden area.  

We have opted for a variety of drip irrigation systems so that all community members can learn about drip irrigation installations and see what might work best for their own home gardens.  Drip irrigation keeps your plants happy and conserves water. 

But first.... we need to clean up the greenhouse! 

All hands on deck this Sunday, April 30th at 11 AM.
