Planting Progressing
On Sunday, May 15th, garden members met up at the garden to plant and socialize. The day was overcast and a little cool but provided some relief from the very hot weather we have recently had. A few seeds went in, along with veggie starts, compost and faith. We enjoyed a perfect little potluck dinner party under the 'tent' and raised a glass to successful gardening in 2016. I forgot to take pictures, but went over today to admire the garden and everyone's work.
Fern & Sheila have a luscious layer of soil in now, just waiting to embrace some seeds.
Our strawberry 'field' - lots of berries coming.
The herb garden is growing strong.
Juanita's spuds are happy in their snug corner of straw.
Spaghetti Squash protected from those pesky crows.
The bunches of chives throughout the garden are so pretty.
The bees are all over the kale flowers.
Things are heating up in the greenhouse (around 93.5 degrees) and the tomatoes are lovin it.
Thank you to the anonymous gardener who weed whacked all around the beds! And to Juanita who top-dressed the rose garden with mulch. Members make our community garden great.

Sarah's Tomatoes
Just a reminder. Sarah Fowler left tomato seedlings in the greenhouse for everyone's use. Feel free to take many on Sunday at the planting party.
Mason Bee Water Fountain
You'll see this plate on the table under the holly tree. I read somewhere it is difficult for bees to drink from large containers of water. They need something to sit on. Like marbles. Feel free to top it up as you go by.

The Buddy System aka Companion Planting
West Coast Seeds is a great go-to resource not only for seeds, but for all sorts of gardening advice. Here is a link to an excellent article on Companion Planting for help in planning your garden.
West Coast Seeds provides a mail order service, or gardeners can also find their seeds at Campbell River Garden Centre on Old Peterson Road in Campbell River. But be careful - you may come home with a truckload of plants.

A big thank you to everyone who placed an order for our Garden's fundraising project with Vesey's Bulbs & Seeds. The order arrived this morning and we got them all delivered this afternoon.

Mason Bee Update
I went to the garden this morning and found a most exciting thing. I went to the hive to check how many cocoons were still there and two holes were filled with what looks like cement. They have started laying eggs for next year. Nice to know some are alive and continuing on.
