Bokashi Composting Workshop

Bokashi Composting Workshop

Tahsis Community Garden Society
invites the community to a
BOKASHI COMPOSTING WORKSHOP

Lead by Terry Fassbender, Organic Master Gardener

Bokashi composting is a safe, quick, and convenient way to compost in your kitchen, garage, or apartment, using a specific group of microorganisms to anaerobically ferment all food waste (including meat and dairy).  Since the process takes place in a closed system insects and smell are controlled.  The process is very fast, with compost ususally read to be integrated into your soil or garden in two weeks.

If you want to build your own composter bring two 5 gallon buckets and one tight-fitting lid.

Plans for TCGS 2015

Dill in the TCG 2013

Congratulations to the members of the Tahsis Community Garden Society, starting out a new growing season!  There are only one or two beds left available, (call me at 7805 if you want to join) and the garden is pleased to welcome back the gardeners, and a special welcome goes out to all the new members!

Bachelor Buttons in the TCG 2013

At the Spring Meeting, plans were made for all kinds of activity in or for the garden.  Plans were made to prep the greenhouse for another year, and members will also attend a general clean up party to tidy up the winter debris.  As everyone in Tahsis knows, there are always blackberry vines to fight off!

There is an upcoming workshop on Bokashi Composting!  Terry is an O. M. G. (Organic Master Gardener) and we are so happy to welcome his family to our town, and he is now a new director of the Tahsis Community Garden Society.  The other TCGS directors acclaimed this year are Stephanie, Silvie and Janet.  The president is Kim, the vice-president is Jessie, and the secretary/treasurer is me (Karli).

More info coming soon about the upcoming Bokashi Compost Workshop.

Our blog here has been sitting dormant for quite some time, but there are lots of great older photos if you want a trip down memory lane.  This summer watch for more updates and photos of our amazing garden!

Strawberries are ripening!

Gardeners, don't forget to stop by the communal strawberry patch for a snack while gardening... the strawberries are ripening!  Juanita and I each had a handful yesterday and they are amazing.  You can't beat strawberries that taste like strawberries!  |Enjoy!  We are thankful to Marta for donating those strawberry plants a couple of years ago, and to Alisa for transplanting them.  They are still going strong!

Special Thanks

Thank you Paul for volunteering your time and mowing the garden grass.

Not only does Paul mow, but last weekend I found him at the garden with his generator, to run his whipper snipper around the edges!

Janet, Paul's better half (and our society vice-president) was busy today trasplanting some good looking cukes and planting onions!

Strathcona Food Security Project

Last Saturday, we were lucky to have a visit from Cynthia Bendickson, the co-ordinator of the Strathcona Food Security Project.  Cynthia enjoyed her tour of the garden and expressed her admiration for our successful community garden, and school meal programs.  Cynthia hosted an open house and an inspiring discussion about food security issues in Tahsis.

After a long blogging hiatus

Spring is Sprung, and I'm starting to chronicle the Tahsis Community Garden's events again.  There has been a lot of activity lately, and this will be our best year ever.  Almost every bed has been started and all our members are excited about what we've planted so far.
