Juanita, Kim, Maureen and Mervin have been all working at filling up the beds in the greenhouse, 1/3 leaves 2/3 soil. We are hoping to have enough soil to finish filling all the beds in the greenhouse so please don't top up any outside beds with the communal piles of soil. It never goes as far as you'd imagine, eh? A good reminder that composting and soil building is important in our soil starved village.
Kim wants to pass on the message that if you are interested in lending a hand (and shovel) please don't forget to add the leaves, leave the middle bed until last, and we will have a meeting to divy up greenhouse space soon. Thanks again for another great work party everyone!
A quick note of thanks to Doug Edward, who volunteered to help his friends and neighbourhood gardeners by driving the truck and loading up and unloading the (extremely heavy) wood for the beds. And helping deliver some more donated wooden frame windows to the garden.
By the way, thank you to Judy B. for those windows! One of the windows has turned a raised bed into a mini greenhouse already.
We really appreciate all the support and help we get from our friends and neighbours here. Thanks again everyone!
The Tahsis Community Garden had its early beginning in the fall of 2009 and in March, 2012, registered as a Society under the BC Societies Act. The member community keeps our garden maintained, healthy and thriving.

Claire Trevena visits our Garden
and gets a welcome from Juanita, who takes care of our "Environmentally Friendly Garden Pest Control Unit" also known as Dudley the Duck, who was hatched by our Kindergarten to Grade 3 class last year.
Claire Trevena, our North Island MLA dropped in to see the garden, and is involved in her own community garden where she lives. She was in Tahsis today meeting and speaking with community members and had a tour of our local salmon hatchery.

Well, it Didn't Rain for our Work Party...
but we did wake up to SNOW this morning!
Is that a polar bear? No, just Ludo the dog.
Kalu was at the garden too.
Hopefully Bev's cabbage is ok in the snow!
Catherine G. brought some much needed tea and healthy snacks, always a great way to support the garden!
Sophia and Kalu played by the holly tree. Sophia would throw snow balls and Kalu would jump up and catch them.
Even in the snow, there are many colourful signs of spring.
Sophia was happy to dig around in the Farm to School Garden.
Some hardy greens
Our community herb bed lavender
Blossom time in Tahsis
Chocolate Mint is making a comeback.
Dave and Traci work on building the raised beds inside the greenhouse.
Our sparklingly clean and tidy port-a-potty.
Thanks to the Village of |Tahsis employees for doing our spring empty-out!
The largest raised bed in the greenhouse.
Coffee break
Glyn, Traci and Fern work together. Working together is a common theme in our garden.
The Carpenters, living up to their name!
The finished beds! Thank you everyone! Also thank you to Kim and Debbie who spent some time wrestling and pruning the ever-present, ever-hardy, ever-menacing blackberry vines!

Making Stock at CMESS
Watch this slide show of volunteers making wholesome chicken and vegetable stock in the local school kitchen for the Tahsis Farm to School program. Featured local ingredients from Tahsis gardens, as well as the Tahsis Community Garden include local onions, celery, thyme, oregano, bay leaves, and rosemary.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vvrLNsZ3KiA&feature=youtu.be
Also on the menu in the new year is potato soup, featuring the 65 lbs of beautiful potatoes from the Farm to School bed in the garden, dug up recently by the grade 4, 5, 6 class.
In the Garden, most of us have put our beds to bed for the winter. There are still many rows of carrots in the ground, and I know some of us have put in our garlic with our fingers crossed for a good garlic crop next summer. The herbs are still vibrant and delicious, and at my house we still have a few winter squashes waiting to get roasted for soups. The chard is still popping up, and the kale is just right. There are 2 big pumpkins in the school kitchen that one of our highschool students has big plans for, after taking them out of the science class garden bed.
The PAC Christmas Bazaar at the school is on December 1st this year, and look for the Tahsis Community Garden Society table. Information will be there for signing up for next year, and also we have raffle tickets for sale to win some lovley prizes. An outdoor chair, a Tree to Sea Pottery Bowl, and a mini greenhouse seed starter kit.
